The ELF Arctic Challenge Survival Weekend

Eight brave participants and one slightly cowardly Fundraising OfÄcer are about to embark on the ELF Arctic Challenge 2006, leaving on the 8th Jan and returning on the 15th, to spend a week surviving in arctic conditions in the north of Sweden.

The Arctic Challenge is run by Nigel Startin, an ex-Royal Marine and survival expert. Nigel likes to test the Arctic Challenger’s mettle by running a survival weekend, this year it took place from 25-27 November at Ashcombe Adventure Centre, where he looks at
participants skills (or in my case lack thereof).

On the Ärst day we were shocked to Änd that this was a serious business. After spending most of the afternoon building a shelter that would have to protect us from the elements for the next couple of days we then settled down to a chilly night on the still frozen ground.

The second day consisted of safety lectures, covering such subjects as water puriÄcation, extreme cold injuries and Äre lighting. Later on that evening we were taken on a night navigation, which I’m sure our instructors soon came to regret. After being taken through the basics of maps and compasses we were then told that we had six checkpoints to reach and that it should take us no more than a couple of hours to complete…four and a half hours later we arrived back in camp for a well deserved rest!

The last day consisted of dismantling the shelter, with some people seeming to take rather more than a little satisfaction in taking it apart. After all of this everyone really enjoyed the weekend, learnt many new skills and now cannot wait to get out to Sweden to try the real thing.
