Noel Edmonds, Patron of Exeter Leukaemia Fund, visited Broadclyst in October 2005 to launch the ELF community awards. Noel Edmonds founded the scheme, based on the very successful ELF Corporate Club which has raised more than £250,000 for ELF in the five years since it was launched; the ELF Community Awards reward any community group which raises £1,000 by presenting them with an award based on the ELF Collection Box designed by Wendy Froud. Community Groups raising £500 will receive an ELF Community Group certificate signed by Noel Edmonds.
Numerous community groups in the catchment area of the Haematology centre at the Royal Devon and Exeter hospital received a personal letter from Noel inviting them to attend the launch which was held at the Victory Hall in Broadclyst. Noel presented the Ärst award to Andrew Fry chair of Whimple and Broadclyst Young Farmers Club, who raised £2179. The Young Farmers in addition to their own fundraising schemes were also involved in the Great West Run and the ELF Tandem.
Any Community Group can join the scheme by contacting ELF on 01392 493344. ELF can suggest fundraising activities and provide speakers for the Group to explain what ELF does and how the money raised is used.
