22nd October 2007 will see 20 years since the signing of the trust deed which created ELF. A programme of events to celebrate the raising of around £4million will commence with a service of thanksgiving at Exeter Catherdral on that day. A detailed programme will be announced in the next newsletter.
Preparing for the ELF Golf Day with torrential rain beating against the windows of the Exeter Golf & Country Club the day before was nerve wracking to say the least. Would it go ahead? Would the course be water logged? Keeping anxious eyes on gloomy skies we arrived at the Club on Thursday the 18th May at 7 am to 20 man the reception desk. Very soon we were joined by the early starters of our field of 213 golfers and by 8 o’clock our stoic starter, Jock Todd, launched the 9th annual golf day for ELF.
As usual the day passed in a flurry of activity with golfers, who had become friends over the years of the competition, signing in and four hours later returning to enjoy the delicious carvery prepared by Chef George White and his team. Irrespective of their state of play everyone commented on how much they enjoyed the day as we awaited the prize giving.
We were pleased to welcome Newsreader Jemma Woodman of ITV Westcountry who once again generously gave up her time to present the prizes and organise a very successful auction. The final results saw Gary Bourne, Sharon Powell and Matt Jones winning the men’s competition with 46 points and Kath Copp, Joanna Pascoe and Leslie Riccard winning the ladies’ competition with 41 points. Managing Director Jeremy Astley-Sparke of Brufords of Exeter presented the Bruford Cups to the winning teams. We would like to express our appreciation to our main sponsor, Renault Distributors, Bristol Street Motors, Exeter and to loyal supporters and local businesses. Warm thanks to everyone at the Exeter Golf & Country Club for their help in ensuring the success of the day.
We would like to thank everyone who supported us both financially and with their valuable time with the result that we are delighted to report that a total of £7,500 was raised this year - the best figure ever!
A final note for golfers - next year will be our 10th anniversary on Thursday 17th May 2007!
(Thanks once again to Pat & Francis on their achievements. A fantastic effort and they wrote the article too!)
