Donated money is spent on new equipment, facilities to make treatment more comfortable for both patients and carers and research into methods of managing and monitoring leukaemia and related blood diseases carried out at the hospital.
Whilst the success rate in the treatment of Leukaemia and related blood disorders continues to improve, it is a deeply regrettable fact that the number of reported cases continues to rise at a dramatic rate. It is also a fact that, for a reason which remains unknown, the South West is the worst affected area in the entire U.K.
Over 10,000 patients are currently being treated, or having their condition monitored, by the staff of the Haematology Unit based upon the Yarty Ward at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.
It is expected that over 300 new patients will also require treatment this year. The rise in the number of cases has rendered existing facilities inadequate and a new Leukaemia Unit has been built. The role of the Exeter Leukaemia Fund (ELF) was to raise £1.5 million to complete the building, in addition to maintaining expenditure on equipment, research and treatment.
If you can help ELF, by fundraising, working as a volunteer in our shops, joining a support group, making a donation, or, indeed, in any other way, please do make yourself known by clicking on the Want to Help button. I can assure you that your support will be greatly appreciated, not only by the team at the RD&E, but also the thousands of people for whom they provide the very finest patient care.
