Donated money is spent on new equipment, facilities to make treatment more comfortable for both patients and carers and research into methods of managing and monitoring leukaemia and related blood diseases carried out at the hospital.
Exeter Leukaemia Fund has been chosen as the Charity for the 2008 FX Factor.
The FX Factor is the South West’s premier annual talent competition, which attracts potential singing superstars form all over the south west, to auditions which are held in Exeter, Plymouth and Torbay.
The selected finalists will perform in front of judges and a massive crowd at the Riviera Centre in Torquay on 31st May. The judges for the competition will include Anthony Cost from the band Blue and the final will also be broadcast on Sky TV’s Red TV Channel 186.
The winner of the competition will produce a CD which will be sold in record shops and other outlets throughout the south west. All of the proceeds of this years winning CD will be donated to Exeter Leukaemia Fund.
Mark Whittle Fundraising Officer for ELF said “It’s fantastic that Terry Mills and his Team at Star Promotions have chosen to support ELF this year. We hope that the competition will be a great success and the CD is a big hit. Who knows we may find another local talent like Joss Stone. The money raised will be used to support the ELF Garden Project”.
Terry Mills of Star Promotions who visited the Haematology Centre said “We have chosen to support ELF this year and hope that the people of the South West will support this years FX Factor and in dong so help raise funds for ELF. I have seen the plans for the garden project and hope that our support will generate funds to assist in delivering this worthwhile project”.
On 22 October 1987 the Deed of Trust establishing Exeter Leukaemia Fund as a Charity was signed and registered. More than £4 million has been contributed to Haematology treatment at the RD&E since and the Haematology Centre, for which ELF two thirds of the funding (£1.5 million), is recognised as one of the best in Europe.
A number of special events have taken place and are being organised to celebrate 20 Years of ELF. Events will incorporate the 20 Years of ELF brand and special logo and culminate with ELF’s 21st Birthday Party in October. It is hoped that this year of celebration will raise a substantial sum which will be used to enhance patient care; refurbish the gardens at the Centre and fund new research building on the diagnostic tests already delivered which can only enhance the treatment of leukaemia and related disorders.
