Donated money is spent on new equipment, facilities to make treatment more comfortable for both patients and carers and research into methods of managing and monitoring leukaemia and related blood diseases carried out at the hospital.
Exeter Leukaemia Fund has been chosen as one of the charities this year of the Great West Run. ELF still has a number of places available for people who would like to take part in this year’s event.
All of the money raised by Team ELF runners will go towards the ELF Gardens Project. Mark Whittle Fundraising Officer for ELF said “The ELF Gardens Project will refresh the open space courtyards and gardens around the Haematology Centre as well as delivering much needed privacy for in-patients”.
Robert Moore of the Great West Run Management Team visited the Centre to see the existing gardens and look at the plans for the regeneration project said “We have chosen ELF as one of the Charities of the 2008 Great West Run as it provides the funds to support the vital work of the Haematology Centre in Exeter. Many people are unaware that the work of the centre supports patients across Devon and the South West area”.
On 22 October 1987 the Deed of Trust establishing Exeter Leukaemia Fund as a Charity was signed and registered. More than £4 million has been contributed to Haematology treatment at the RD&E since and the Haematology Centre, for which ELF two thirds of the funding (£1.5 million), is recognised as one of the best in Europe.
A number of special events have taken place and are being organised to celebrate 20 Years of ELF. Events will incorporate the 20 Years of ELF brand and special logo and culminate with ELF’s 21st Birthday Party in October. It is hoped that this year of celebration will raise a substantial sum which will be used to enhance patient care; refurbish the gardens at the Centre and fund new research building on the diagnostic tests already delivered which can only enhance the treatment of leukaemia and related disorders.
Team ELF runners need to raise a minimum of £100 in sponsorship and will benefit from a post race reception area with massage provided by Exeter Physio, Sports and Spinal Clinic in our Team ELF marquee.
